Website Overview

The original website for Theaterschiff Bremen presented a rich cultural offering but lacked a modern digital experience. Outdated visuals, heavy use of gradients, and a cluttered structure made it difficult for users to quickly access relevant information or feel inspired to attend a show. The goal of this redesign was to transform the site into a clean, engaging, and user-focused platform that reflects the vibrancy of the theater itself.

Challenge
The existing website suffered from:

  • Visually overwhelming gradient backgrounds and decorative elements
  • A lack of clear hierarchy and content prioritization
  • Limited emotional engagement on first impression
  • Missing trust-building and interactive components
  • No centralized overview of current shows and events

The challenge was to modernize the visual language while improving usability, clarity, and user engagement.

Approach & Concept
The redesign focused on reduction, clarity, and atmosphere. By removing unnecessary visual noise and introducing strong, curated content sections, the new design allows the theater’s offerings to take center stage.

Key improvements

1. Clean visual language
All gradient-heavy backgrounds and excessive decorative elements were removed. The new design uses a minimal, structured layout with clear typography and strong contrast, creating a more contemporary and accessible look.

2. Hero section with image film
Instead of static visuals, the new homepage features my cinematic image film in the hero header. This immediately immerses users in the atmosphere of the theater and creates an emotional entry point.

3. News at a glance
Directly below the hero section, users can now see the latest updates and highlights. This ensures that important content is immediately visible without requiring scrolling or searching.

4. Dynamic gift section
The gift voucher section features a rotating background image that adapts seasonally (e.g., tulips in spring). This keeps the page feeling fresh and relevant throughout the year.

5. Comprehensive show overview
All current performances are displayed in a clear, structured grid, making it easy for users to browse, compare, and select events.

6. FAQ help section
A dedicated FAQ page was introduced to address common visitor questions, reducing friction and improving the overall user experience.

7. Social proof & engagement

  • Integration of real Google reviews to build trust
  • Embedded Instagram feed to showcase current impressions and community engagement
  • Newsletter signup to establish a long-term connection with visitors

8. Modern footer
The footer was redesigned with a clean structure, providing quick access to essential information while maintaining visual consistency with the rest of the site.

Outcome
The redesigned website delivers a significantly improved user experience by combining clarity, emotional engagement, and functional enhancements. Visitors can now quickly find relevant information, feel inspired by the visual storytelling, and interact with the theater across multiple touchpoints.

The result is a modern, flexible platform that better represents the identity of Theaterschiff Bremen and supports its goal of attracting and engaging a broader audience.

Logo

This redesign reimagines the visual identity of Theaterschiff Bremen by transforming its previous childlike and illustrative logo into a refined, contemporary mark that better reflects the theatre’s artistic character and cultural presence.

The original identity relied on a simple paper-boat aesthetic, which communicated approachability but lacked the sophistication, symbolism, and versatility expected from a modern cultural institution. My goal was to preserve the recognisable idea of the theatre ship while elevating it into a bold, memorable, and concept-driven identity system.

The final logo combines multiple theatrical elements within a single minimal silhouette. The overall form references the ship itself, while the left and right shapes subtly resemble theatre masks — a direct nod to performance, storytelling, and dramatic expression. At the center, layered circular forms evoke a stage curtain, with flowing wave-like lines simultaneously representing curtain folds and the movement of water beneath the ship. This duality connects theatre and maritime identity into one cohesive symbol.

The typography was intentionally chosen to contrast geometric precision with elegant theatrical flair, creating a balance between modernity and artistic expression. The result is a logo that feels iconic, scalable, and highly adaptable across print, signage, merchandise, and digital applications.

The new logo is communicating multiple layers of meaning through a clean and immediately recognisable form. The redesign demonstrates my interest in strategic visual storytelling, brand simplification, and creating identities that feel both emotionally engaging and functionally timeless.
